Happiness Inn consistently receives praise for its authentic Cantonese and Hong Kong-style cuisine, distinguishing itself from many other Chinese restaurants in the Newcastle area. Reviewers commonly highlight the generous portion sizes and well-executed traditional dishes, which are considered a strong draw for both locals and visitors. The restaurant’s atmosphere is described as modest and somewhat unpretentious, with an open kitchen that adds to the dining experience. Service is frequently noted as friendly, efficient, and accommodating, contributing to a welcoming environment. Although the décor may not be upscale, the focus on quality food and reasonable prices makes it a preferred choice for those seeking genuine Chinese flavors in a casual setting. Stumbled across this place on a hungover Sunday afternoon. I’m not local so I didn’t know where to eat. But my god was it a good choice. Hands down the best Chinese I’ve ever eaten. Once I walked in and was offered a Chinese or English menu and the place full of Asian families enjoying Sunday dinner i knew I was onto a winner. Super clean open kitchen too. We stuffed ourselves and didn’t feel overly full or thirsty like you do after a Chinese. All the meat was fall off the bone tender and fresh. Duck was amazing.

Good Cantonese style cooked food here! Service is pleasant and fast. Restaurant is located on the first floor just a stone’s throw from Newcastle China Town. My opinion the food here is better than many of the restaurants in Chinatown.

The restaurant is a little shabby but the food is outstanding. We arrived 45 minutes before they closed so were told we could only choose main dishes. They gave us 2 separate menus - one of the "Anglicised" usual Chinese dishes that you'd expect to see; the other contained traditional Hong Kong dishes. We ordered from the latter & then discovered that the portions were huge! We had tomato & egg; lotus root, potato & sticky rice cakes in sizzling spicy pot then king prawns in a Typhoon Shelter sauce. Stunning. Can't wait to go back.

The Happiness Inn is always a lovely place to go for a Chinese meal. Fair prices with a ton of options to choose from. Staff are helpful and food is really good (there's a reason I keep returning). You can call in advance or turn up and they will happily seat you if there is space (most of the time there is). 10/10 would definitely reccomend to anyone wanting a great Chinese meal in town.

I have passed this restaurant so many times and I finally went inside. The interior looks very traditional and the food is quite authentic. I ordered Black pepper diced beef, Turnip cakes, and Beef rice rolls. My personal favorite is turnip cakes. They are so tasty. I had these cakes somewhere before and it was too chewy for me, but this one was perfect. The Balck pepper diced beef was very good as well, but I wish they added a bit more onions. The beef rolls were great as well, and especially the ones on the bottom that soaked in the soy sauce tasted even better. I would have to come back to this place as I saw hot and sour soup and yolk buns on the menu. Highly recommend this place to anyone who likes dim sum or Hong Kong/Cantonese food!

Some of the best Cantonese cooking I’ve ever experienced. The Duck is outstanding, every other dish bursting with a real depth of flavour. Service is fairly standard for a place like this. Not everyone is going to love the decor, but if you want to experience Hong Kong in tye 1970s ( I do) it’s perfect Best Chinese in Newcastle? I think so

I’m now based in London but whenever I come back to Newcastle, this is the only Chinese restaurant I go to. It serves a mixture of Cantonese and mainland China dishes. The food is authentic and super tasty, portions are large. I’m not sure what the previous poster was complaining about in terms of service - every time we come here the service has been consistently excellent. Prices are cheap especially for the quality and quantity of food you are getting. We’ve been to all the Chinese restaurants in Newcastle. Without a doubt, this restaurant serves the best quality Chinese cuisine in Newcastle by a mile!

Most Authentic and delicious Chinese dishes and dimsum in Newcastle ... Probably the best roasted duck you could ever get in North East ... Service is reasonably good in non-peak hours ... Highly recommended!!!
